Sharp Joins the Android One Family in Japan with the Sharp Aquos 507SH

Sharp is the latest OEM to join in on the Android One party, as it introduces the Sharp Aquos 507SH in Japan. Since it is part of the Android One program, there isn’t too much to talk about in specs here. This is no flagship, but is another one of those forgettable mid rangers in specs.

The front of the device is a 5″ HD IGZO display with Corning Gorilla Glass 4 on top. Inside you will find the octa-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 617 SoC with Adreno 405 GPU, coupled with 2GB RAM and 16GB of internal storage, expandable up to 200GB.  There’s a 13MP rear camera and a 5MP front camera as well, along with a pretty standard 3,010mAh battery. There are also some mentions of dust and water resistance, but the webpage, which is in Japanese, mentions two specs together (IP55 and IP58), so we are not sure on which is the correct spec or if it means anything special.

Of course, the draw of this phone is not its spec sheet. It’s the fact that this is an Android One device, coming with Android 6.0 Marshmallow out of the box. Being Android One, it will very likely get the Android 7.0 Nougat update when it drops, sooner rather than later. Pricing of the device is not mentioned on the site as of now, but this should be priced competitively. We do not know how competitive Japan’s market situation is, which brands dominate which segments, so it is difficult to estimate if this device is something that the Japanese market needed.

The pure Android experience on a budget is what makes Android One different from the sea of Android mid rangers. This device, coming in with a Snapdragon 617, may be the sign of freedom for OEMs to make more decisions on the hardware that goes into their devices. We hope to see more Android One devices in the future, with better and updated specs.
