With the recent controversy surrounding the Spectre and Meltdown vulnerabilities, it’s no wonder that many smartphone users are worried about the status of their devices. While it’s true that neither exploit has been used in the wild yet, that doesn’t mean attackers can’t take advantage of them. Knowing your phone is safe gives peace of mind, and thankfully, Essential, the startup behind the Essential phone, has been proactive when it comes to Spectre and Meltdown.
Android Oreo Beta 3 for the Essential Phone ships with Google’s January security patch for Android, which contains fixes for Meltdown and Spectre. The update also includes a number of bug fixes, picture-in-picture, support for instant apps, and a faster boot-up sequence. From what we’ve been able to ascertain, it seems that Essential is focused on bringing bug fixes and the last of Android Oreo’s new functionality to the beta.
Essential hasn’t announced a release date for the Essential Phone’s first stable Android Oreo update, but if the smaller changelog and shrinking window of time between beta updates is any indication, the release might be just around the corner.
Despite a few missteps, Essential has forged ahead and tried to make good on its promises. It’s worked hard to regain customer trust by focusing a huge amount of time and effort on the developer community, bringing support for Project Treble, Google’s modular upgrade scheme, to the Essential Phone and participating in monthly AMAs on Reddit. It marks a huge change in tone for the nascent company, and deserves recognition.
