Google Files Go now works on tablets, supports filtering for files on SD card, and lets you set the default handler for file types

For years, Android didn’t have a proper first-party file manager. The DocumentsProvider gained basic file management capabilities in Android 4.4 KitKat, but unfortunately, it was never upgraded to a full-fledged manager. Most users turned to third-party solutions, which is one of the reasons why file managers are some of the Play Store’s top sellers.

In November, Google released Files Go, its own smart storage app. Files Go isn’t a true file manager — it doesn’t let you access your phone’s full internal storage directory. But it’s chock full of useful features such as offline file sharing between devices, and it’s exploded in popularity — Google says that more than 10 million people have installed Files Go so far. Now, it’s received its first major update.

In a blog post this week, Google announced three new features for Files Go: Tablet support, expanded SD card support, and file handler customization.

Tablet support in Files Go is big news — the initial release didn’t support tablets, but now, Android tablet users can install Go without issue. And the app’s new SD card storage list and grid views let you apply a filter to see which files are saved to external storage.

Finally, the new Files Go lets you set the default handler for file types. You can customize which apps will open files with the new Open with flow. (For example, if you use multiple third-party PDF viewing apps to open PDF files, you can specify which app opens them by default.)

With the latest update, Files Go has become a lot more versatile. It still isn’t a complete file manager, so here’s hoping that Google adds missing functionality in a future update. But while the app’s functionality isn’t groundbreaking, File Go is great for folks who want a simple, no-frills smart storage app.
