Motorola Moto E5 Render Reportedly Leaked

Motorola had a busy 2017. The Lenovo-owned smartphone maker shipped more than half a dozen Moto Mods accessories for the Moto Z Force smartphone series, launched the Moto G5 Plus and G5S Plus, and took the wraps off new Moto E and Moto X series handsets. It’s looking to keep that momentum going in 2017, rumor has it, and an early leak gives a tantalizing glimpse at one of its upcoming smartphones: The Moto E5.

Motorola has a hit on its hands with the $129 Moto E, which doesn’t skimp on hardware despite its affordable price point. It’s a great device for folks who a basic, no-frills smartphone.

The fourth-generation Moto E was released in June 2017,  so it makes sense that we’re seeing renders of its successor. The leaked pictures of the Moto E5 (courtesy MySmartPrice) show the phone in gold, but it’ll likely be available in other colors at launch. (The Moto E4 comes in grey, blue, and gold.) It also appears that Motorola has opted for a metal or brushed plastic design.

The Moto E4 had a small square fingerprint sensor in the bezel right below the screen, and the render of the Moto E5 shows that it has been replaced by the Motorola logo. It’s possible that the fingerprint scanner has been moved to the back of the phone where the Motorola logo sits on the Moto E4.

If you zoom into the image, you can see the date “April 3” in the clock widget on the home screen. That might mean nothing, but it might also hint at Motorola’s plans to unveil the Moto E5 in a few months time.

Sadly, that’s all there is to go on right now — many of the details are just speculative. In any case, we’ll be following Moto E5 developments closely ahead of its expected launch this year.
