China-based phone maker HMD Global and Nokia have been working in tandem to revitalize the Nokia brand, attempting to bring quality Android devices to market while listening to consumer feedback. Case in point: The Nokia 6 (2018) and Nokia 7, which launched with Android Nougat a few weeks ago, have already received upgrades to Android Oreo.
Both the Nokia 6 (2018) and the Nokia 7 are getting an over-the-air (OTA) update to Oreo this week, according to a post on Nokia’s Weibo page. “Today, the new Nokia 6 and the Nokia 7 officially received the Android Oreo 8.0 system update,” the company posted.
It’s unclear if the Oreo update brings with it support for Project Treble, Google’s modular upgrade scheme designed to expedite the Android software update process, but phone manufacturers like Huawei have already introduced it. With Project Treble, we’ve seen some pretty amazing things, including universal ROMs which boot on any Treble-supported device.

For the uninitiated, the Nokia 6 (2018) and Nokia 7 have octa-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 630 system-on-chips (SoC) paired with 4GB of RAM and 3,000mAh batteries. The only difference between the two phones is screen size — the Nokia 7 sports a 5.2-inch screen with a Full HD resolution, while the Nokia 6 has a 5.5-inch screen with a Full HD resolution.
Both the Nokia 6 (2018) and the Nokia 7 are China-exclusives for now, meaning that when (or if) they launch internationally, they’ll likely launch with Android Nougat. It’s also not clear which countries they’ll come to first, but recent reports indicate that the Nokia 7 may retail in India by the end of January.
