Sony’s Next Xperia Flagship Could Drop the Headphone Jack

It’s not uncommon to see Sony’s Xperia smartphones go year to year without any major changes. But now, there’s talk of a flagship 2018 flagship Xperia phone switching to a new design — and possibly one without a 3.5mm headphone port.

The scoop, courtesy of a Sony filing with the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) this week, is an interesting find — there usually isn’t much information about hardware components in FCC documents, which tend to focus on cellular and wireless band specifications and certification test results. There also isn’t hard evidence that the Sony device in question, which has the FCC ID number of PY7-21831A, is the company’s next flagship. But the filing shows that it has a 5.7-inch display and measures 152.79 x 72.42 mm, which is a promising sign.

It’s not until you start looking through the filing’s diagrams that you see signs the new handset is dropping the headphone port. The image above, for example, shows the upcoming Sony phone using a single USB port for both charging and audio (thanks to a dongle).

There’s corroborating evidence in an included table showing the phone’s I/O cable charging modes. It lists a lone USB and headphone port, and indicates that the USB Type-C port does double duty as an audio interface.

In case there was any doubt that the upcoming Sony Xperia phone won’t have a 3.5mm headphone jack, Xperia Blog pointed out that the FCC label and label location appears to be right where Sony has traditionally put the 3.5mm headphone port on its devices. Here’s an image depicting it:

USB Type-C dongles are one of the major inconveniences that fans of 3.5mm headphone ports tend to complain about, so it’ll be interesting to see how Sony transitions to this implementation. We’ll have to wait to find out, it seems.
