The Samsung Galaxy S9 will be Revealed on February 25 with an Emphasis on its Camera

The Galaxy S9’s launch date has been rumored about time and time again in recent months. The phone was initially expected to make an appearance at the 2018 Consumer Electronics Show, which didn’t happen. Other sources pegged the launch for February 27, and while that turned out to be closer to the truth, Samsung confirmed February 25, 2018 as the official launch date on Wednesday.

Samsung sent out invitations to a Galaxy Unpacked event scheduled for 12 p.m. EST on February 25, ahead of Mobile World Congress 2018 in Barcelona, Spain. The accompanying press release says the Galaxy S9 will “reimagine the camera” and “[redefine] the way you share your moments”.

Now that the launch date of the Galaxy S9 (and presumably the Galaxy S9+, too) is no longer a mystery, the phone’s specifications have started to come into focus.

A photo of what appears to be the handset’s retail packaging leaked a couple of weeks ago. Assuming it was the real deal, the Galaxy S9 will have a water- and dust-resistant body, an iris scanner, a 5.8-inch QHD+ (2960×1440) AMOLED edge-to-edge 18:9 aspect ratio Infinity display, AKG-tuned stereo speakers, a 8MP front sensor, a 3,200mAh battery, and a “Super Speed Dual Pixel” optically stabilized 12MP sensor with F1.5/F2.4 variable aperture and “Super Slo-mo” shooting modes. Other sources suggest it’ll come with Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 845 system-on-chip in some countries and the company’s Exynos chipset in others, and that it’ll have 4GB/6GB of RAM with at least 64GB of internal storage.

Separately, case renders have given glimpses at the Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9+ designs.

It’s possible that each of these rumors and reports spawned from a nugget of truth somewhere down the line, of course. That’s why it’s important to take unconfirmed information (even from reliable leakers) with a grain of salt, because the details can change minute-to-minute until the phones are officially announced.
