Xiaomi devices are really popular in our forums for a good reason: the company sells smartphones that are fairly affordable without compromising too heavily on hardware specifications. That’s why the Xiaomi Mi A1 on the Android One program is so incredibly popular. Unfortunately, Xiaomi’s mixed history when it comes to providing timely kernel sources creates a situation where many XDA members own the device but the development scene is rather poor. Fortunately, this isn’t true for every Xiaomi device, as evidenced by the flourishing community behind the Snapdragon Redmi Note 3/4.
Now, a few newly released Xiaomi devices, the budget Xiaomi Redmi 5A, Redmi Y1, and the Redmi Y1 Lite, has now received official support for the TWRP custom recovery. This is the first step needed for a device to grow a custom development scene, as a recovery is always needed for people to make backups before proceeding with modifying files on their device which could cause the phone to no longer boot. Furthermore, custom recoveries make it easy for developers to distribute their work in flashable zip formats so anyone can install it.
